Did AI kill SEO?
No. AI changed what search is, which is different. What's still true, what's gone, and what to do about it.
Read articleThe short version: SEO earns a position in a list. AEO earns a place in the answer. Here's what changes when you optimise for the second.
Answer engine optimisation is the work of making your business and its expertise easier to find, understand and use in an answer. That answer might explain a topic, compare suppliers or help someone decide what to buy. The aim is relevant inclusion, with an accurate account of what you do and a source link where the engine provides one.
SEO earns a position in a list. AEO earns a place in the answer. That is a useful distinction between objectives, rather than a clean division between technologies. Search results already include answers, and AI search can send people to websites. The two disciplines share much of the same groundwork.
For a business owner, the practical question changes. Alongside asking whether your service page ranks, ask whether a useful answer to a prospective customer’s question could draw on it. Does the page explain who the service suits, what it includes and where its limits are?
Being mentioned is useful only if the answer represents your business accurately and reaches someone you can help.
This table compares the main focus of each discipline. It describes how we organise the work, not a rule that every search engine follows. Neither approach gives you control over the final result.
| Dimension | SEO focus | AEO focus |
|---|---|---|
| Desired visibility | A prominent search result for a relevant query. | Inclusion or citation within a relevant answer. |
| Content job | Help a searcher choose and use the right page. | Explain the subject clearly enough to support an accurate answer. |
| Technical foundation | Crawlable, indexable pages with clear site structure. | Accessible source content, with the same search foundations where engines use search. |
| Evidence | Useful information and credible support for claims. | Specific, attributable facts that remain clear when quoted or summarised. |
| Measurement | Search impressions, positions, visits and resulting enquiries. | Observed mentions, citations, answer accuracy and any resulting visits or enquiries. |
| Limit of control | The search engine decides ranking and presentation. | The answer engine decides whether and how to use a source. |
Start with the questions customers ask before they contact you. A page called “Our solutions” may say very little about the decision they face. A useful service page explains the problem, the work involved, likely constraints and what happens next. It gives readers enough information to rule you in or out.
For example, a business considering an agency needs to know what the agency delivers and what its own team must provide. Publishing that division of responsibility is useful whether a person reads the whole page or an engine uses part of it. Vague promises leave both with less to work with.
The important information should be present as readable text on the page. A polished animation cannot compensate for missing service details. Keep internal links useful, remove technical obstacles to access and make the business name, services and contact details consistent across your own pages.
Google’s guidance on AI features says the usual SEO foundations still apply to its AI search experiences. It does not require special AI schema. Structured data should match the visible content. Those are Google’s requirements; they should not be presented as a universal specification for every answer engine.
Clear writing does not turn an unsupported claim into evidence. If you describe a service as suitable for a particular situation, explain why. If a price depends on scope, say what changes it. If you have permission to publish a real example, describe the work and its limits without implying every client will get the same result.
This also means keeping information current. An accurate description of last year’s service can become a misleading answer today. Someone in the business needs to own the facts and approve changes. An agency can help publish and check them, but cannot supply experience or evidence that does not exist.
No agency can promise that an independent answer engine will recommend you. A citation is not an endorsement, and a mention is not a sale. An answer may use a source for a narrow factual point without suggesting that the reader should buy from that business.
Nor should AEO become an excuse to publish endless variations of the same question. If a page adds no useful explanation, evidence or decision support, changing its heading into a question does not make it valuable. Write the answer your customer needs, including the inconvenient parts.
Treat answer checks as observations with a defined scope. Record the question, the engine, the date and the response you saw. Distinguish a linked citation from an unlinked mention, and check whether the description is accurate. A screenshot shows one response, not your visibility across every possible conversation.
Keep the commercial question in view: are suitable prospects finding enough information to take the next step? Our AI search visibility programmes describe the work we offer. The useful starting point is an honest assessment of your existing pages, rather than a promise about an answer nobody can control.
No. They have different objectives but share useful work: accessible pages, clear structure and reliable content. If your site is difficult to find or understand, fix that foundation. Adding an AEO label does not remove the need for it.
Use an FAQ when it answers genuine questions left over from the main content. Do not repeat the whole page or manufacture questions to fill a template. An FAQ is a useful format, not a promise of inclusion in an AI answer.
No. We can improve the material you publish and monitor the responses we observe. The engine decides what it retrieves, cites and says. Any proposal should distinguish the work being delivered from outcomes the supplier cannot control.
Start by checking the pages that support important buying decisions. Keep useful content. Correct omissions, unsupported claims and access problems first. A full rewrite is justified only if the existing site cannot explain the business clearly or support what customers need to do.

The answers aren't a lottery. Engines pick sources for reasons that can be understood and worked on. These are the ones that matter most.
